The Gundam Beauty Pageant
by Charon the Sabercat

I'm trying to wrap all of the subplots together now. We'll start with… um… Britainmaru and Gunpanzer's!

Chapter 34 - Chapter 35 - Chapter 36

The Gundam Beauty Pageant
35. Finally, Gunpanzer and Britainmaru get a little well deserved attention

It was raining in the garden, and although it seems like the setting for a sappy love story, it was being set up as Britainmaru and Gunpanzer's hunting base. A tall, bulbous pup tent was set onto the grassy area of the garden, getting darker slowly from the bottom up because Gunpanzer had forgot to set up the tarp. A fire pit was set upon the concrete (and was flooding with more and more water by the second). The only thing that the Gundams had brought with them that was shielded from the rain was the Action Packer ice cooler, which was stocked with spare ammunition and Lunchables.

Britainmaru had the best seating in all of Gunpanzer, riding right on top of the enormous Gundam's right shoulder. He held a little umbrella in one hand to keep the pounding rain off of his eyes, and in the other hand he held his trusty gun. “Oh, today is a glorious day, my good hunting buddy, for today, we begin the hunt!”

“We-uhll, Ah don' know if today is really glorious, but what de hell, it'll work fer me!” Gunpanzer laughed, brandishing a compound bow. “WOO! Shoot `em up, shoot `em up!”

“We need to begin by finding the beast's tracks.” Britainmaru jumped to the ground, searching for footprints in the mud. Gunpanzer let him wander ahead before following, watching to make sure he didn't step on anything vaguely foot-print-like.

Britainmaru scanned the ground with a keen eye. He could see vague imprints of everyone who had been through the garden in the past day. Zapper Zaku had apparently gone to the gazebo to eat those berries he liked again, but that was last night; the tracks were overlaid by Captain's footsteps, who had wandered aimlessly around the compound just a few hours before. Cobramaru and Hoshiko's footsteps tailed each other around the corner to a knoll where they couldn't be seen. A trail of flowers with the pollen blown off meant that either Zero or Talgeese had followed them; had it been Deathscythe, the petals would have been stripped. But finally he found it. An old, but noticeable trail of paw prints that lead into a forest along in the not-to-distance. He signaled to Gunpanzer to follow him, and together they marched into the underbrush.

“The beast… ergh- is not as… ergh- elusive…” Britainmaru fell through the thick branches he was trying to push himself through into a bare patch of grass. He shook himself straight, his umbrella falling upside down in the grass. “As I thought he would be.”

Britainmaru was answered with the anxious snap of twigs and vines as Gunpanzer forced his way into the clearing. His bow was hung around his neck by the string. “Ah wouldn' know, really, Ah just been followin' you.”

The tiny Gundam sighed and was tempted to sit in the grass in defeat, but decided against having a wet bum for the next hour. “My, this has been no fun at all, my towering friend. It's like following a trail marked with yellow flags and… and…”

Gunpanzer spoke the first thing that came to his mind. “Bread crumbs?”

“And bread crumbs! That's-“ Britainmaru stopped short and faced Gunpanzer with his eyebrow lifted higher than his forehead. “Bread crumbs?”

His gargantuan friend shrugged. “Must be a Neotopia thang.”

With another sigh, Britainmaru crossed his arms. “Oh, this is so dull, my comrade. Perhaps we should just leave while we still have our dignity.”

“Aw, come on!” Gunpanzer squatted and folded his hands. “Please, Ah don' wanna go yet!”

“You don't?” cried Britainmaru. “But… why?”

“Because Ah'm havin' fun out here wit' you!”

The words seemed to touch Britainmaru, because he suddenly stood straight up and began to glow with confidence. “You are right, my friend! Even if in the hunt, we are not successful, we are still forming bonds of friendship that will never be broken!” He grabbed his umbrella's handle. “Come, we must resume our quest!”

With that, he threw the umbrella over his head, pouring several minutes' worth of water over himself. Gunpanzer laughed. Britainmaru scowled and ignored him.

In the silence of the forest-

“Gunpanzer, quickly, back me up!”

Never mind.

“A-WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-ee-EEE-Ee-ee, bom bom bo-way!”

“A-weem-a-wep- A-weem-a-wep- A-weem-a-wep- A-weem-a-wep-“

Britainmaru peeked through the bush and waved his hands exaggeratedly, urging Gunpanzer to stop. He was also given the quiet signal, so Gunpanzer squatted down to his friend's level and whispered.

“What's up?”

Britainmaru turned back to face him, eyes aglow. “I found his den.”

He parted the branches. Past the little bush was a patch of wet earth, where the grass was trampled and the trees were literally pushed out of the way. Littering the ground were the bones of several animals, mostly rabbits and one very young deer. The mud itself was an almost sickly red from the blood that had soaked into the dirt.

Gunpanzer gasped and held up a hand for Britainmaru to slap. “Tag me, buddy, we got `im!” With a jump and a flourish, Britainmaru slapped Gunpanzer's thumb and giggled to himself. “Oh, we've got him. When he returns to his den, we strike! He won't know what hit him!”

They giggled some more and nestled down into a thick patch of grass, holding their weapons are the ready.

“You know what, Britty?”

“Yes, my friend?”

“We prob'bly shoulda brought the camp stuff with us.”

Nothing's funnier than stupid hunters. I'm glad I could write this chapter, short as it is.
