Chapter 4 - Chapter 5 - Chapter 6

Second Beginning
Chapter 5

Light. You'll see it all around you, everyday, in all shapes and sizes. It's usually easy to be fooled into thinking the whole world is nothing, but light. Unfortunately every light has shadow even if you can't see it. Some have more darkness in them then others and if you feed it will grow and become even more powerful. Eventually the host will become overcome by their darkness and a shadow being will be born. Each demon is dark, but I never said they were evil.

Zamar and Kiyoshi rode for two hours before finding the area were they suspected Zakkary was. They pushed their bikes up a steep climb, trying to move as silently as possible so they wouldn't alert Zakkary of their presence. The last thing they wanted was for him to disappear again or worse.

Ahead Zamar spotted his brother's bike leaning against the rock wall on the final flat section of ground before you reached the top. Both left their bikes and silently ran up the steep sloop. Zamar reached the top first and what he saw surprised him. So much so that Kiyoshi had to run forward and cover Zamar's mouth so he didn't give them away.

Zakkary was standing in front of them near the cliff with his back to them. Even though the other two hadn't made a sound Zakkary knew of their presence. “Don't bother, I know you're there. It's not to hard to sense your life force now that your organic.” Zakkary said, his voice sounding somewhat deeper then usual. Zamar pushed his friend's hand off his mouth, but Kiyoshi kept a loose grip on his arm. Zamar observed that Zakkary's once red hair was now black, making his new look complete.

“Hey what's your problem Zakkary?! I don't know what you're going through, but don't you think this is a little much?” Zamar asked, taking a step forward. Zakkary spun around and the twin's eyes met. Both glared, waiting for the other to back down. After a few more seconds Zakkary answered.

“What's my problem?” he started, “My problem is you. All of you!” he shouted. “You've become that which you hated so much! You've dropped down to their level! Now you live a false life with a thin barrier separating you from the truth.” He paused before continuing, “I was born to do one thing; help my host achieve what he wants, even if he doesn't know what that is. Now there is only one thing he'd want me to do. When you get your memories back it won't matter what you've done for the past thirteen years. Those human memories will seem like dreams and your real lives will become the reality.” Zakkary said all this while taking a couple steps back, towards the cliff. It was a straight drop to the ground. A small, but rough, probably deep river ran along the area where mountain met flat ground, but if you fell into the water you'd most likely drown in seconds. “You two will have to find your own way out of your mistake, but I have a mission,” another step, “and weather it's right or wrong I must do what I see as right.”

And with that Zakkary took one last step and, before he knew it, Zamar rushed forward towards his brother. He jumped as Zakkary fell and caught his hand in mid air, but they were already over the edge. Zamar's eyes widened and he saw something from the past. Flashes, like explosions, and two figures dieing together. Maybe that was them in their first life; it could only be destiny that they would be stuck together till the end and beyond and that was okay. Nothing else seemed to matter as they both fell towards death below; together again till the end.

Zamar still had his brother's hand and surprisingly Zakkary held it tightly, as if he was afraid Zamar would disappear if he let go. So the two fell, hitting the rushing water head first, before falling victim to the darkness.

Kiyoshi watched helplessly as his friend jumped after Zakkary over the cliff. He watched Zamar reach out and grab his brother's hand before they fell together to their imminent death. And what did he do? Nothing. Kiyoshi stood there, petrified. His two best friends had left him and he'd done nothing to stop it. `What kind of person lets his friends commit suicide though?' Kiyoshi asked himself. The answer he came up with was a bad one.

Yet still he didn't move. Kiyoshi just stared, trying, hoping that he'd wake up from some horrible nightmare and none of this would have happened. Unfortunately everything that had happened was real and he knew it. His breathing began to quicken as he inched his way towards the edge of the cliff. He knelt down and looked over.

“There's no one there.” He whispered. There were no bodies on the ground meaning they'd hit the water, but chances of surviving the fall into the water was less then hitting the ground. This thought made Kiyoshi shrink back to the safety of the rock wall, well away from the cliff's edge. There he took his sunglasses off and opened his eyes towards the fading light. It burned, but he didn't look away; he couldn't.

As the sun disappeared he sat down and pulled his knees to his chest, hiding his head in them. He tried not to cry, but his eyes had already been watering from being burned so he couldn't hold back tears.

“Why didn't I help? I was right there. I had him in my grasp, but I let him go and now…I could have at least jumped too. This is all my fault.” Kiyoshi cried. “What am I gonna tell Kenshin and the others? I shoulda tried to stop them. I should've at least tried. I should've held on, but…..” Kiyoshi lost himself again and his tears fell faster. In his mind he felt responsible for everything that had just happened.

He sat there for what seemed like hours and continued to blame himself until a familiar voice called his name.

“Kiyoshi! Are you okay?!” it shouted. He suddenly felt a pair of arms wrap around him and Kiyoshi looked up.

“Kenshin?” he whispered, his eyes watering again. Kenshin allowed the boy to cry on his shoulder as he stroked his head, trying to calm him. Tora was there too, but he was looking around for his sons. Eventually he walked to the cliff's edge, looked back at Kiyoshi, then over the cliff.

“Kiyoshi,” Tora said loudly to get his attention, “what happened and where are Zakkary and Zamar?”

Kenshin looked down at Kiyoshi's face before staring at his father. Kiyoshi merely glanced at Tora before burying his face into Kenshin's chest again. Tora's eyes widened and he tuned to look back over the cliff. Below him the rushing water zooms by, almost in a taunting way. Kenshin could feel his father's anger rising so he quickly picked up Kiyoshi and ran all the way back down to where Naomi stood waiting.

She'd brought the three bikes down and then had decided to wait for her husband to bring Zakkary and the others back, but when Kenshin came with only Kiyoshi in his arms she somehow knew what happened. Tears weld up in her eyes as Kenshin gave her Kiyoshi. She looked at her oldest son and walked away.

Kenshin watched her go before turning and walking towards the river. `Maybe there's hope; maybe they're still alive.' He thought, almost believing himself. As he neared the rushing water he saw that his father was already there. His hands were clenched and his face had a look of pure hate on it. Kenshin walked up next to him and waited for his father to speak.

“I can't believe he would go so far Kenshin. Why would he do this to them. Zamar and Zakkary never did anything to him. They deserved a second chance at life, but he took it away.” Tora paused and looked at his son. It had been Kenshin who'd vanquished the demon so long ago so he was probably beating himself up inside for not checking to make sure he'd finished the job. Kenshin turned and walked down river, away from his father, while making a promise to the demon,

“I will find you and you will pay for what you've done Shadow.”

So everyone how was that. Too much going at once?

Mel: And everyone should remember Shadow.

Raptor: The only thing I remember is everyone not liking the ending.

Well to tell the truth I didn't even know why I put Shadow in my first fic until now. Everything I write always seems to write itself. Now I need you guys to review and tell me what you think. I really REALLY need you're reviews right now so I'll remember this is still here.
