Second Beginning
Chapter 7
(Long Household- 7:09 AM)
Kiyoshi was in the living room, waiting for Kenshin or Naomi to return down stairs when either Zamar or Zakkary woke up. He'd been sitting there all night, staring down at his mask, worrying about his two friends. Tora had given Kiyoshi a once over to make sure he hadn't been hurt before leaving for work earlier that day
Now the only sounds in the house were the occasional sound of someone moving around upstairs. Kiyoshi thought this was very annoying because he'd hold his breath and listen to see if they would come downstairs, but they never did. So he sat in a lounge chair, tuning out everything around him.
When a hand was placed on his shoulder Kiyoshi jumped back so hard that the chair fell back, taking him with it. Kenshin kneeled down next to the startled boy, smiling while shaking his head. “Sorry Kiyoshi, I didn't know you were so far out of it. If I had I woulda let Naomi wake you up.” Kenshin said, helping Kiyoshi up. Naomi stood by the stairs; she looked tired, but happy from Kiyoshi's point of view.
“So they're okay? Zakkary and Zamar. They're gonna be okay?” Kiyoshi asked quickly. Before Kenshin answered he slowly righted the fallen chair before facing the younger child. Kiyoshi was staring at him with a hopeful look on his face, so Kenshin nodded. “That's good.” Kiyoshi said, falling back into the lounge chair. Kenshin noticed that his face had fallen again and guessed what was wrong.
“Look Kiyoshi whatever happened up there wasn't your fault.” Kenshin placed the jar containing Shadow in Kiyoshi's lap. “This is.”
Kiyoshi cocked an eyebrow at Kenshin before examining the contents in the container. Past the black field covering the thick glass was a small black figure. It was sitting at the center of the container, hugging its knees to its chest. He couldn't make out its face very good, but Kiyoshi knew he'd seen the figure before. “Kenshin! Isn't this Zakkary?!”
“No Kiyoshi, that's Zakkary's demon side. Meet his new guardian angel, Shadow.” Kenshin said, taking the jar back. “And the deal was if he didn't protect Zakkary he would suffer a thousand painful deaths and burn in-” Naomi suddenly stepped in and hit Kenshin on the back of the head.
“Kenshin please. Your still talking to Kiyoshi remember. Besides I think he'd like to see the twins before he has to leave.” she said, acting like your typical mother. Kenshin nodded and Kiyoshi stood up, following the two upstairs. The younger boy noted that in was much darker upstairs then it was down so it was all that much easier for him to see. It was a common trait that all the friends seemed to share, night vision. It varied with each person, but Kiyoshi's was the strongest, so his eyes were very sensitive to light. Next in line was Zamar and Zakkary, follower by Kenshin, and last with Naomi and Tora.
The first room they entered was Zamar's. There were no lights on, but Kiyoshi could make out Zamar lying on his bed. His head and one of his arms were bandaged and his left eye was covered up too. Kiyoshi could also make out some bandaging on his chest, but he was covered by a thick blanket so he couldn't see much. “They're very lucky to be alive right now. Usually if you fall into that water from that height feet first you'd drown and head first you'd die on impact, but these two somehow survived. Plus they didn't suffer as many injuries as I thought they would.”
“Their will to survive even surprised me and I'm their mother; I'm the one who's supposed to know their limitations, but that doesn't mean I'm not glad they survived.” Naomi said quietly, Kenshin nodding in agreement. Kiyoshi looked up at Kenshin's face before waking over to Zamar's bedside. His friend was unconscious at the moment, but seemed to be comfortable despite his injuries.
“Will he be well enough for the ceremony?” Kiyoshi asked. Kenshin looked his younger brother once over and, once Kiyoshi turned around, nodded. “It might be for the better that their injured. They won't be able to do anything stupid until I can talk to them.”
Naomi moved aside and headed back downstairs as the two boys moved to Zakkary's room. Like his brother Zakkary's head and chest were bandaged, but neither of his eyes were covered. Instead his left shoulder was covered with thick gauze, held in place by bandage tape. Kiyoshi eyed the injury, but decided not to ask about it. Kenshin walked over to Zakkary's desk and placed the jar containing Shadow next to his computer. He glared at it momentarily before moving back over to the door.
Kiyoshi was standing next to Zakkary's bed, waiting to see if his friend would wake up. Nothing, Zakkary didn't even look like he was breathing. So Kiyoshi sighed and moved back out to the hall. Once out Kenshin slowly closed the door and motioned Kiyoshi to head back downstairs.
In the kitchen Naomi was waiting for him so she could drive him home. Since they had to be in familiar environments for the ritual Kiyoshi wasn't going to get to see his friends until after the transfer and Naomi was going to stay there with him to make sure everything went smoothly.
You see in order for the spirits to combine properly with their second life memories the three had to be asleep. That way when they woke up it would be like they never died and the human memories would be like a dream. That's another reason Naomi was going with Kiyoshi. She knew it was going to be weird when Kiyoshi woke up and she was worried about what he would do. Then again she was even more worried about her own sons, but figured that Tora and Kenshin could handle them both…hopefully.
